ACT Research's latest State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks shows September erased August's gains in retail pricing.
The average retail sale price for Class 8 trucks dropped 5.2% month-over-month.
"On a year-over-year basis, prices were 14% lower," says Steve Tam, vice president at ACT Research. "Prices are expected to remain stable at or around this lower level through 2024, transitioning to year-over-year growth in early 2025."
Same-dealer Class 8 retail truck sales fell 2.3% in the month. September is typically the third-best sales month of the year, ACT says, running 6% above average.
"The wholesale segment also saw volumes decrease compared to August, down 10%," Tam says. "As is usually the case in the third month of the quarter, auction volumes improved, up 34% month-over-month. Combining the three channels, total market same-dealer sales volume rose 12% month-over-month in September."
ACT's report provides data on the average selling price, miles and age based on a sample of industry data. It also provides the average selling price for top-selling Class 8 models for each of the major truck OEMs, including Freightliner (Daimler); Kenworth and Peterbilt (Paccar); International (Navistar); and Volvo and Mack (Volvo).
