The latest Pressure Systems International (PSI) Commercial Fleet Tire Digest is now available.
This month’s issue addresses wheel end thermal event root causes. PSI states a catastrophic wheel-end thermal event can lead to total loss of a trailer and it’s cargo, costing well over $100,000. The company asks, “But how do you determine the root cause when everything is burned to a crisp?”
The answer isn’t easy, PSI says. Forensics after a wheel-end thermal event can be very difficult to determine the root cause and, in many cases, inconclusive. Making it even more difficult is that the evidence may have been destroyed by the thermal event. PSI also states tires are not prone to self-ignition, and must be heated to at least 400° F for several minutes to reach at point where they will ignite.
The company goes on to address potential causes of a thermal event, as well as the importance of quality pre-trip inspection procedures, which can be “very important to help rule out potential contributors” to a wheel end thermal event.
