"As we reach this incredible milestone, it's clear the issue of right to repair resonates deeply with Americans across the country," says Bill Hanvey, president and CEO of the Auto Care Association. "This is not just about fixing cars; it's about protecting consumer rights, preserving competition and ensuring the auto care industry remains a vibrant, competitive marketplace."

The association says the right to repair movement is crucial to ensuring vehicle owners and independent repair shops have access to necessary tools, data and parts to maintain and repair vehicles without being locked into manufacturer-restricted options.

Support has come from all 50 states, the association says. A survey earlier this year by the Auto Care Association found 79% of vehicle owners believe they have the right to choose where their vehicle is repaired and 82% expressed concern over manufacturers restricting access to repair information. More than half of shops — 63% — say they're experiencing issues with accessing repair data and 84% rank right to repair as their top issue.

"These numbers highlight the urgent need for Congress to act. The current situation creates a lopsided market where large manufacturers hold all the power, and consumers and independent shops are left at a disadvantage. Ensuring right to repair is not just good for consumers — it's vital for the health of our economy," Hanvey says.

The REPAIR Act, HR 906, is sponsored by Rep. Neal Dunn, R-Florida, and has the support of 56 cosponsors from both sides of the aisle. It's been sitting in the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Innovation, Data and Commerce since November. It still must pass the full House Energy and Commerce Committee to be considered on the floor.
