April's preliminary Class 8 same dealer used truck retail sales retreated from March's performance, down 5.4% month over month, ACT Research says.
"The decline was not as large as expected based on historical seasonality, which called for an 11% month over month decrease," says Steve Tam, vice president at ACT. "Auction sales dropped by 52%, in typical first month of the quarter fashion. The wholesale segment enjoyed the only improvement in April, growing 14% month over month."

Tam says the total reported preliminary sales were down 27% month over month.
"Given outperformance relative to seasonality, it appears as though freight growth continues to entice used equipment buyers," Tam says.

The preliminary average retail price for same dealer sales of used Class 8 trucks is up, gaining 5.4% month over month to land at $57,148. That beat seasonal expectations, Tam says, which looked for an 11% decline.
