This was Purcell's fourth time participating in the Tech Skills Rodeo and his first year reaching the finalist stage. In addition to his overall crown, Purcell also named champion of the company's medium-duty overall division and Navistar medium-duty division and netted $19,000 in total winnings.

Erick Lincoln of Rush Truck Centers – Albuquerque, won the overall heavy-duty title and Jon Steckman, Rush Truck Centers – Columbus, Ohio, was his runner up. Lincoln is a former Tech Skills Rodeo grand champion. Paul Crawford, Rush Truck Centers – Haines City, was runner up in the medium-duty division.

Typically held in December in San Antonio, the Tech Skills Rodeo was developed by Rush Enterprises to recognize talented employees, give them an opportunity to sharpen their skills and learn more about the company's sponsor partners and their products and services. The 2021 contest was the 16th in program history, and across all disciplines Rush Enterprises and its sponsor partners awarded more than $270,000 in prizes to the Rush Truck Center employee network.
