The right maintenance is key to keeping critical safety systems running in winter weather, Bendix says.

Proactive maintenance now can help trucks when the temperatures start to fall, Bendix says in its latest round of seasonal tech tips. This year, its focusing on advanced driver assistance technologies (ADAS) and tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS)

Winter weather puts more pressure on ADAS, Bendix says, including collision mitigation, lane departure warning and stability control. These systems perform on accurate sensor input to perform as intended. Snow, ice and road grime can obscure cameras and radar units.

"Before heading out, drivers should make sure there are no active diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and confirm that forward- and side-facing cameras or radar units are free of snow, ice or other debris," says TJ Thomas, director of marketing and customer solutions. "Even minor obstructions can impact the performance of these safety systems."

Bendix says a thin layer of buildup such as from salt film on the radar can degrade radar accuracy while snow buildup around bumpers or grilles can block sensor fields of view. Technicians should verify electrical connections remain secure and watertight to guard against corrosion from moisture, salt and road chemicals. Reviewing sensor alignment and calibration is a good practice before winter beings, especially if a vehicle has had windshield or bumper work.

Temperature swings can affect tire pressure and before winter sets in, TPMS solutions should be checked for proper operation. Technicians should also keep an eye on tread depth, signs of uneven wear and properly tightened wheel bolts.

"Winter can be tough on trucks and drivers alike," Thomas says. "With the right preventive steps in place, fleets can better navigate the toughest winter conditions with confidence."
