June was a great month for commercial truck sales and orders but, overall, the new truck sales market was down 11.1% year-over-year through the first half of the year, the American Truck Dealers (ATD) announced in its most recent Truck Beat report.

ATD reports medium- and heavy-duty commercial truck sales totaled 40,662 units in June, up 6.5% from 2025. The medium-duty market had the stronger year-over-year comparison, up 13.6%. Class 8 sales were up just 0.3%.

Through the first six months of the year, Class 4-8 sales stand at 193,692 units. The medium-duty space is down 9.3% at 99,826 units and the Class 8 sector is down 12.9% at 93,866 units. Despite the negative year-over-year evaluations, both markets have improved substantially since the first quarter when sales were off by nearly 18% market wide.

ATD Chief Economist Patrick Manzi also believes June’s strong sales and order data are good signs for the market and year-over-year comps for the months ahead. He cites the more than doubling of orders as a positive, and also notes following a four-year freight recession rates are finally climbing again.

“The turnaround comes after many carriers have exited the market, trucking supply and demand have come closer into balance, and the reduced supply of trucks has pushed up freight rates,” Manzi says. “Even with diesel-fuel price spikes in recent months from the ongoing war in Iran, many trucking firms have been able to operate profitably and pass along the some of the higher fuel costs to their customers.”

Through June, International has been the biggest market share climber in the Class 8 space (up 1.6%) but the biggest loser of share in Class 4-7 sales. Volvo and Mack also have added 1.1% market share, respectively, in the Class 8 space through the first half of the year.

In the medium-duty sector, segment leaders Ford (2.1%) and Freightliner (4.0%) both grew their market share in the first half and now represent nearly 58% of the market. Ram and Mack were other winners in the Class 4-7 space.
